Performance Series Glass Partitions

Good sound insulation and a choice of glazing, in frames of established width.

The Performance series is part of the range of [IQUBX modular glass partitions]. The [main glass partitions page] explains [what glass partitions are and why they are used], the [framing systems and glass configurations] available, and the parameters to consider when [choosing a glass partition]. This page deals with the three models of the Performance series: what they offer, how they obtain their sound insulation, how they differ from one another, and where each is used.

The Performance series is the IQUBX range for projects that need good sound insulation and a choice of glazing, in frames of established width. Its frames are multi-slots aluminium sections: the body of the frame is divided into several slots. In GP18100 and GP2160 the same base frame takes single glass, double glass, a DGU or VIG unit, or in GP18100 a hybrid of the two, by changing the snap-fit mouldings. GP2175 is a single-glass model. The level of sound insulation is therefore chosen at specification, room by room, within one system. Where the frame itself must take part in the sound insulation throughout, or where the glazing and the width of the frame must be changed after installation, the [HAPIUS series] is the appropriate choice.

Systems of this kind are described as office glass partitions, glass cabin partitions or double glass partitions in India and the Middle East; as glazed partitions, single glazed or double glazed partitions in the UK and Europe; and as glass wall systems or demountable glass walls in the USA.

The Performance advantage: one system for all rooms

The rooms on one floor seldom need the same sound insulation: a space divider beside a corridor needs little, a managerโ€™s cabin more, and a meeting room more still. The Performance series meets these different needs with one system. The glazing is chosen room by room (single glass, double glass or a sealed unit in the same base frame), while the frame, the finish, the doors and the method of installation stay the same. One set of details, one family of components and one installation method serve the whole floor, which simplifies design, procurement, site work and later maintenance. Where a room needs high sound insulation, or a partition whose glazing and frame width may change after installation, the [HAPIUS series] is the better choice. For grids and mixed materials, see the [Creative series]; for a single pane in a slim frame, the [Essentia series].

How the Performance series obtains its sound insulation

Sound passes from one room to the next through the glass, through the frame that holds it, and around the partition through the building. The Performance series acts on the first two. Its frame is a rigid multi-slot base profile fitted with compliant snap-fit mouldings, which hold the glass and give the frame a measure of compliance at each point of support. Its glazing can be arranged to raise the sound insulation further: two panes with a cavity between them, panes of different thickness, or in GP18100 a single pane combined with a sealed unit. Sealed DGU and VIG units are accepted where a project requires them, though separate panes generally insulate sound better. The door and the junctions with the building complete the result. This section explains each of these in turn, and how the series differs from HAPIUS, in which the same principle is carried through the whole frame.

A multi-slot frame

The base profile of a Performance frame is a rigid aluminium extrusion with a series of slots along its width. Snap-fit mouldings engage these slots, and together the slots and the mouldings form the body of the frame and the channels in which the glass is held. The body of the frame is therefore divided into several slots, and is not a single solid bar of aluminium between the two faces of the partition. GP18100 has five slots across its 100 mm width. GP2160 and GP2175 follow the same construction in narrower frames.

Compliant snap-fit mouldings

The mouldings are held in the slots on the base profile, giving the frame a measure of compliance at the place where the glass is supported. Because there are several mouldings across the section, that compliance is distributed across the frame and is not confined to a single gasket. This is what distinguishes a Performance frame from a plain rigid channel with a cover moulding.

The effect is limited, however, because the rigid slots of the base profile form the larger part of each section. In the [HAPIUS series] the principle is carried through the whole frame: only a slim spine is rigid, and everything between the glass and the spine is compliant or resilient. The [HAPIUS page] explains [why conventional frames limit sound insulation] and how a frame can be made to take a full part in it.

Two panes and the cavity between them

A single pane insulates sound largely by its mass. Two panes with air between them do better, because the air acts as a spring between two masses, and the two panes together resist the passage of sound more than a single pane does. The depth of the cavity matters: a deeper cavity lowers its resonance and improves the insulation. GP18100, at 100 mm, gives a deeper cavity than GP2160 at 60 mm, and it is the model to choose where double glazing is specified for its sound insulation.

Panes of different thickness

Every pane has a frequency, set by its thickness, at which its insulation dips. Two identical panes dip at the same frequency, so the weakness of one is not covered by the other. Where more sound insulation is wanted from a double-glazed Performance partition, panes of different thickness or construction are therefore recommended, for example 10 mm toughened glass with 13.5 mm laminated glass. Laminated glass also adds damping of its own through its interlayer.

Sealed units and the hybrid build-up

DGU and VIG units are developed for thermal insulation, and a project may require them for that reason, or to match the glazing used elsewhere in the building. GP18100 takes sealed units from 18 to 60 mm thick, and GP2160 from 18 to 24 mm. For sound insulation alone, two separate panes with a deeper cavity generally perform better than a sealed unit, as the main page explains under [where conventional glass partitions fall short].

GP18100 also offers a hybrid build-up, GP18100H, in which a single toughened or laminated pane and a sealed unit of 18 to 24 mm are held together in the one frame. The two elements differ in mass and in construction, so they do not share the same weak frequency.

The door and the junctions

A partition performs only as well as the door set into it and the joints around it. Performance partitions are paired with IQUBX DF03 door frames and GD05 doors. The doors take single glass, double glass or a sealed unit, to correspond with the partition, and can be fitted with drop seals. The result in a finished room also depends on the ceiling void, the floor and the adjoining walls, as described on the main page under [acoustic requirements and practical limitations]. IQUBX can advise on these at design stage.

Sound insulation ratings for each model and glazing configuration will be published on this page, together with the test reports.

Glazing configurations

The series uses four letters for its glazing configurations: S for single glass, D for double glass, V for a sealed DGU or VIG unit, and H for the hybrid of a single pane with a sealed unit. The configuration is selected at specification, and the mouldings are arranged on the base frame to suit it. A project can therefore use GP18100S in its cabins and GP18100D in its meeting rooms, and have the same frame, finish and doors in both.

The origin of the Performance series: maximum from minimum

Innovation and sustainability are, at heart, stories of constrained resources. The global economy is living that story now, at the scale of the planet: less material, less energy, less room for waste, and more expected of every resource. IQUBX knows the story from the inside. The company grew within constraints of finance, of knowledge base, of operations and of marketing reach, and learned early that leadership lies not in having the most, but in making the best of what one has. The Performance series is the clearest expression of that discipline. Designed to give the maximum from the minimum, it achieved more than its brief asked: one compact system that serves many rooms, many glass configurations and many budgets.

Designing within constraints

Four models from three or four components

What the constraints produced

A small answer to a global question

Designing within constraints

When the Performance series was conceived, IQUBX could not afford separate tooling, inventory and supply chains for every glazing type a project might need. So instead of designing a family of partitions, it set out to design one base frame that could do the work of many. The answer was a multi-slot frame with snap-fit mouldings: the frame provides the slots, and the mouldings decide what the slots hold.

Four models from three or four components

From only three or four components, the series delivers four glazing models: S for single glass, D for double glass, V for DGU or VIG units, and H for a hybrid of single and DGU glass. The base frame stays the same; only the mouldings change. [One grammar, four languages.]

What the constraints produced

The economy of components became the strength of the system. Fewer extrusion dies, less stock, less material and lighter logistics keep the series affordable and its footprint small. Snap-fit, mechanical assembly without adhesive keeps every part recoverable and reusable at the next refit. And because the same frame holds double and DGU glass, the series gives good sound insulation at a cost that a single-purpose frame could not match. Sustainability was not added to the Performance series as a feature; it is the result of designing with less.

A small answer to a global question

The resource crunch facing the global economy is the story IQUBX has lived, told at a larger scale. A system that asks less of the world’s materials, of a project’s budget and of its logistics, while giving each room the glass it needs, is the kind of solution that story calls for. This is what IQUBX means by Empathetic-Dynamic Architectural Systemsโ„ข, and the Performance series is one of its clearest proofs.

GP18100 is the widest frame of the series and offers the widest choice of glazing. Its five-slot base profile takes all four configurations: single glass, double glass, a sealed unit up to 60 mm thick, or the hybrid build-up. With double glass it provides the deepest cavity in the series. It is the model for meeting rooms, conference rooms and cabins in which sound insulation is the main requirement, and for projects that want every glazing option available within one frame.

GP2175 โ€” 22 ร— 75 mm

GP2175 is a single-glass partition for 8 to 12 mm glass in a 75 mm multi-slot frame, up to 3600 mm high. Its width matches the usual thickness of the gypsum and other partition walls of a project, so that the glazed and the solid walls of a fit-out align, and it is paired with the DF03-75 door frame. It is chosen where the good sound insulation of single glass in a multi-slot frame is sufficient, and the partition must sit in line with 75 mm walls.

DF03 is a modular door frame. A 50 mm base section is widened in steps of 26 mm to 76 and 102 mm, which gives the three widths used with the Performance series. It can be used with glass partitions, solid partitions and masonry, takes doors up to 45 mm thick, and accepts concealed hinges. GD05 doors have 56 ร— 45 mm stiles and are made for single glass, double glass or a sealed unit, with concealed or butterfly hinges, a drop seal and a choice of locks and handles. Sustainability

Sustainability was built into this series as an intent, from the design stage. IQUBX wanted to offer the different glass configurations that the rooms of a project need, with the minimum number of components. The multi-slot frame was the answer: one base profile and one family of mouldings serve single glass, double glass, sealed units and the hybrid build-up, where a conventional range needs a separate frame for each. Fewer components bring economy in manufacture, in warehousing, in logistics and in assembly on site, and each of these lowers the carbon footprint of the partition before it is even installed.

The series was designed to give the maximum from the minimum: four glazing models from three or four components, with less material, less stock and lighter logistics

Performance series partitions are made of recycled-content 6063-T6 aluminium, are assembled dry and are demountable, so frames and glass can be relocated and reused when a layout changes, and are not scrapped. The series carries the GreenPro Ecolabel Type 1. The main page explains the [hidden carbon of interior change], and the HAPIUS page sets out the [IQUBX notional lifecycle study] of modular interior systems.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the IQUBX Performance series?

The Performance series is the IQUBX range of glass partitions for good sound insulation with a choice of glazing. It has three models, GP18100, GP2160 and GP2175, in multi-slot aluminium frames of 100, 60 and 75 mm. GP18100 and GP2160 take single glass, double glass or a DGU / VIG unit in the same base frame.

Choose GP18100 for the widest choice of glazing, the deepest cavity for double glass and the hybrid build-up. Choose GP2160 for a choice of glazing in a compact 60 mm frame, or for curved partition runs. Choose GP2175 for single glass in a 75 mm frame that sits in line with gypsum and other partition walls.

Yes. GP18100 and GP2160 take single glass, double glass and sealed units in the same base frame. Cabins can be single-glazed and meeting rooms double-glazed, while the frame, the finish and the doors are the same in every room.

Yes. IQUBX has delivered curved partition runs and rounded corners in the GP2160 model of the Performance series. Curved runs are made from a radius of 600 mm, to a height of 3000 mm (10 feet), usually in single glass of 10 or 12 mm. The minimum radius can vary with the supplier of the bent glass.

GP2175 has a 75 mm frame, which matches the usual thickness of gypsum and other partition walls, so glazed and solid walls align. It takes single glass of 8 to 12 mm and is paired with the DF03-75 door frame.

In GP18100H a single toughened or laminated pane and a DGU or VIG unit of 18 to 24 mm are held together in one frame. The two elements differ in mass and construction, so they do not share the same weak frequency.

Every pane has a frequency, set by its thickness, at which its sound insulation dips. Two identical panes dip at the same frequency. Panes of different thickness or construction, such as 10 mm toughened with 13.5 mm laminated, dip at different frequencies, which improves the sound insulation of the pair.

A Performance frame is a rigid multi-slot base profile with compliant snap-fit mouldings, and its sound insulation is set by the glazing chosen at specification. In HAPIUS only a slim spine is rigid and the rest of the frame is compliant or resilient, which gives high sound insulation, and the glazing and frame width can be changed after installation.

GP18100 uses the DF03-102 door frame, GP2175 the DF03-75 and GP2160 the DF03-50. GD05 doors are available for single glass, double glass and DGU / VIG units, with drop seals.
